Preventable Health Conditions

As timely access to primary healthcare services becomes increasing difficult, accessing contraception can be challenging for women across Queensland.

Launched in August 2024, the Community Pharmacy Hormonal Contraception Pilot enables participating pharmacists to prescribe and resupply hormonal contraceptives to women and girls aged 16 and over without the need for a doctor’s appointment.

During your consultation, the pharmacist will carefully assess your individual needs and may recommend a variety of contraceptive options. The contraceptives available through the pilot include Oral medications, Injected medication and Contraceptive devices.

The contraceptives available include:

Oral medications: the combined oral contraceptive pill (excluding high estrogen doses) and the progesterone-only pill.

Injected medication: depot medroxyprogesterone acetate.

Contraceptive device: the combined hormonal contraceptive vaginal ring.

If you and your pharmacist decide on an alternative contraceptive method best suits your needs, this may result in a referral to another healthcare provider.
